Carpets are the crowning glory of traditional Turkmen handicrafts. Turkmen carpets are known all over the world for their subtle beauty and refined patterns. Located in the very city center the Carpet Museum displays a wonderful collection of 500 pure wool hand-made carpets woven by the various Turkmen tribes. Visitors to the museum can admire both old timeless and new sparkling items, and lots of carpet articles as well. The highlights of the museum collection are the first tremendous carpet (18x11 meters in dimensions and 865 kilos in weight), the latest “carpet-giant” entered the Records Book of Guinness for its huge dimensions (21x14) and weight (1200 kilos). Of exceptional interest are two experimental double-faced rugs and two unique superbly dense carpets, the latest containing !,355,000 knots per one square meter.
Visitors to the museum can watch the process of carpet weaving in the museum workshop. The museum also displays all the awards won by the Turkmen weavers at the international exhibitions including eight gold, two silver medals and the Grand Prix, a striking manifestation of international recognition and indisputable skill of Turkmen carpet makers.
